"Many applications in the public and private sectors, such as real-time weather forecasting, aerospace, and biomedical engineering, nuclear fusion research, and Artificial Intelligence," explained Center for Data Innovation research analyst Travis Korte.
People require more sophisticated systems that can process data faster and more efficiently in these and other situations. These systems incorporate thousands of processors to accomplish this.
There are two basic ways to work with a large pool of processors. The first is supercomputing. Supercomputers are massive and expensive. The computer sits in one location with all of its many processors in that scheme, and everything flows through the local network. Distributed computing is another method for incorporating multiple processors. The processors in this scenario, the widely accepted standard form of which is cloud computing, can be located in various geographical locations, with all communication taking place over the Internet.
Why Do People Prefer Super to Cloud?
Because the information in a supercomputer moves so quickly between processors, they can all contribute to the same task. They are ideal for applications requiring real-time processing. The disadvantage is that they are frequently prohibitively expensive. They are built with the best processors, the fastest memory, specially designed components, and intricate cooling mechanisms. Furthermore, scaling a supercomputer is difficult: once the machine is built, adding more processors becomes a project.In contrast, one reason people prefer cloud-based distributed computing is that it is much more affordable. A distributed network's design can be extremely complex, but hardware components and cooling do not need to be high-end or specially designed. It scales smoothly: as more servers (and their processors) are added to the network, processing power grows.
On the downside, Korte noted that supercomputers have the advantage of sending data over short distances via fast connections, whereas distributed cloud architecture necessitates data transmission via slower networks.
However, that contradicts what Indiana University's (home of Big Red II) supercomputing expert Geoffrey Fox told the American Association of Medical Colleges: "Fox... says the cloud's spare capacity often enables it to process a researcher's data quicker when compared to a supercomputer, which process for a long time."
